Scott Le Crass | Why Country Music?

By May 1, 2019May 22nd, 2019No Comments

I first came across Country Music whilst at drama school. The play really stood out to me because of how human it felt. I was drawn to the relationships between the characters and the journey which Jamie goes on.

Years later, I came back to it because I remembered that it was a very rich text, which I thought would be good to use when running acting workshops.

Revisiting the play, I discovered many things which I hadn’t before. The power of the subtext, the stillness of play and intimacy of the characters.

What took me even more by surprise was how much I cared about all of the characters; I felt like I knew them. Being from a working class background, I have a vested interest in putting working class voices on stage. I understand them, I connect with them and therefore feel able to present them with authenticity.

Seeing my working voice (which only in recent years I have started to Ken and be truly proud of) represented on stage is something I wished I’d seen more of in the theatre when I was growing up.
