Huvi f***ing loves tea, Sophie and his boys! Unfortunately when he applies for his British Passport, so he and Sophie can get married in her dream location abroad, he discovers he was never legally registered at birth.

Mulatto Boy is a funny, bold, spoken word inspired show exploring the link between Black mixed – race identity and British national identity and how the two reflect and affect each other. A gut – wrenching ride told through West African theatrical practices and Angolan language, music, dance & traditions. Mulatto Boy asks us, what is it to be Black, Mixed Race and British and who gets to decide what we are?

Edi De Melo

Actor/Writer

Edi De Melo is a black mixed-raced writer/actor and Mulatto Boy is his debut play. He has trained at Mountview and is a former Associate Artist at Nouveau Riche (responsible for For Black Boys, West End). Edi is interested in creating and developing work that helps to develop underrepresented emerging creatives, champions overlooked narratives & breaks traditional western storytelling. As a black mixed race
writer most of Edi’s work fuses Afrocentric storytelling & surrealism with the Black British experience. Recent credits include: The Play That Goes (Wrong UK Tour 2022, Mischief) & The Play That Goes Wrong (UK Tour 2021, Mischief), Suspect (Alessandro, ITV/Disney)

Tunji Lucas

Actor

Tunji Lucas’ credits include Bike Squad, The Bill, Taking the Flack, Raising Baby Rio and Harry and Paul. Theatre includes The Small Things by Enda Walsh; global tour of 11 and 12 by Peter Brook; Titus Andronicus at the Dundee Rep; The Moors by
Tonderai Munyevu directed by Arne Pohlmeier; Headlong regional tour of Romeo and Juliet, directed by Robert Ike; Greenland performed on the Lyttelton, National Theatre and Damned by Despair performed on the Olivier stage at the National, both plays directed by Bijan Sheibani; finally, Olivier – award winning Best Revival for August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by Dominic Cooke. Film credits include Pan, starring Hugh Jackman, directed by Joe Wright; Star Wars: The Last Jedi, starring John Boyega, directed by Rian Johnson. Most recently, video game Skull and Bones by Ubisoft and Blue byte for PlayStation 5, Xbox series X etc.

Colm McCready

Colm is a theatre-maker and wannabe cabaret star based in Belfast. He is an associate artist of SkelpieLimmer who produced his first solo show Scaredy Fat. The show played Belfast, London, Edinburgh Fringe and Dublin Fringe where it was nominated for four Dublin Fringe awards including Best Performer. He is currently developing SHAME SHOW with Fergus Wachala-Kelly supported by MAKE, The MAC and Tinderbox Theatre Company. It will debut at this year’s Dublin Fringe Festival in September

Nick Wray

Judge

Nick graduated from Mountview in 2020 with an MA in Performance (Acting). He has performed on screen, has completed several theatre tours, and appeared in The West End.

Helena Harrison

Sophie Adley

Helena is a Nottingham born actress whose love for acting began at The Nottingham Television Workshop. A Performing Arts degree and a Masters from Mountview later, she is thrilled to have performed in various commercials, short films and theatre tours. She has also taken to writing her own material, including ‘Red Flag’, a comedic monologue about her time working in a factory during the pandemic, and ‘Moo MooMilk’, a duologue which centres around female friendship and the question of whether we should reproduce during the climate crisis. Recent credits include: Olivia in ‘Read the f*cking Manual’ (DNA Studio, Edinburgh Fringe), Eden in ‘The Sisters Club’ (Kaya Hoffman-Derlacka, short film) Lucy in Moo Moo Milk (Anna Galek, stage)

Gabriel is an actor and composer based in London. A graduate of Identity School of Acting, his acting credits include X&Y (Lyric Hammersmith), Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, The Immersive Experience (Layered Reality) and Bridge Command (Parabolic Theatre). Gabriel has also written two musical adaptations of The Frogs and The Witches which have been performed at theatres in Reading and London
