Escaping the party presents a gruelling choice: endure existential crisis forever? Or learn to stay numb to it all? Combining physical theatre with surrealist horror and cartoon comedy, Birthday Fish asks; are we all out of water?
Erin Hughes and Stephanie Burrell are Northern performers and writers based in London. They met whilst training in Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban, and lived together for two years, forming their now 8 year-long friendship. They both work across various creative projects in theatre and film.
Birthday Fish follows the two protagonists as they repeatedly attempt to make it back to the house party downstairs. The show draws on surrealism, cartoon comedy and themes related to neoliberalism, whilst being inspired by the practices of influential artists like Brecht and Kafka.
Dance Art Journal has already listed Birthday Fish as a “show to watch” at this year’s Fringe. They have highlighted the unique nature of Birthday Fish, which fuses physical theatre, text, voice-over, and a dynamic sound score imitating a house party; creating an immersive atmosphere for the audience.
Birthday Fish will also be heading to Greenside Venues, Edinburgh Fringe from 20-24th August. Tickets found here.
