When Nüwa created humanity, she dreamed of them living in joy and fulfillment for eternity. She mended the holes in Heaven with five-colored stones, propped up the sky with the legs of a great tortoise, and halted the Catastrophe, believing she had safeguarded her fragile creations from harm.
Satisfied, she ascended to a divine realm beyond Heaven, unaware that thousands of years later, humanity would seal its own fate with the press of a few tiny buttons.
BOOM!
The Earth shattered into fragments. Humanity was no more.
Nüwa never returns, instead, leaving the task to her minions—the Three Muddy Lolos. Tasked with rebuilding humanity, they contemplate why the previous humans could not secure their own survival and begin experiments by tweaking various dimensions of humanity. They aim to create a perfect breed that truly values life and deserves to live happily ever after. They are willing to go to any lengths to finally answer the question: does humanity have a future?
Muddy Lolos is a dynamic theatre group formed by three innovative female actors and theatre makers—Chia-Yi Chan, Jinyu Dan and Qianyi Wang. Drawing on our rich Chinese cultural heritage, we are dedicated to revitalising ancient Chinese narratives and values for a modern audience through a female lens. Our work is characterised by a fearless blending of tradition and contemporary storytelling, aiming to spark dialogue and inspire audiences through fresh interpretations of time-honoured myths.
Echoes of Nüwa: The Last Human Project will be playing at TheSpace Triplex (Studio), 1-23rd Aug, 10:00am, for Edinburgh Fringe 2025.
