HEARING THINGS
Presented by PLAYING ON
Celebrated theatre company PLAYING ON and multi award-winning playwright Philip Osment open 2019 with Hearing Things, a “honest and heartfelt drama” (A Younger Theatre) breaking through the surface of contemporary psychiatry from the points of view of patients, relatives and NHS staff.
Three performers act out lived experiences of hospital staff and patients in South London, examining how or if we heal and recover inside institutions.
Nicholas is a psychiatrist battling with the demands of his work. His father is showing early signs of dementia and he is finding it hard to cope. When an incident occurs involving one of Nicholas’ patients, his life is turned upside down…
Created using a unique collaborative process between patients, psychiatrists and mental health staff, Playing ON have drawn together the stories of those receiving and providing mental health care. Hearing Things is the result of that work – a process which has instigated real change in the lives of patients.
