YOU ARE AFRICAN FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING

PRESENTED BY STEELACTS PRODUCTIONS
“Remember you are African First before anything” - wise words from Chile’s mother. They could communicate better, but will she listen? Mum’s word is final!

After a sold-out run at the Omnibus Theatre in March 2023, You Are African First Before Anything is back – bigger and better due to popular demand.

This semi-autobiographical one-woman show explores the complexities of the African mother-daughter bond. Our protagonist Chile, an intelligent and ambitious woman in her mid-twenties, embodies the fusion of her British upbringing and Nigerian heritage.

However, her dreams of pursuing a successful career and embodying feminist ideals collide with her Nigerian mother’s traditional views, which prioritise marriage as the pinnacle of a woman’s fulfilment. As Chile grapples with the desire to forge her own path, while fearing the potential strain it may place on her relationship with her mother, we begin to see the new woman she is growing into.

“Insightful, inspiring and historical.” Audience review
