OOTW2026: EMOTIONAL TERROR

PRESENTED BY OUT OF THE WINGS

by Josefina Trías

translated by Sophie Stevens

directed by Camila Ymay González

Out of the Wings returns for its annual festival of Ibero-American playwriting. Celebrating our 10th festival, we present readings of plays from five different countries, all in English translation, and in the UK for the first time.

“That moment when you realise

there’s something in this

you can make something of this

that precise moment

may just be the moment that saves you.”

If breaking up with the love of her life wasn’t bad enough, Clara is now back living with her parents and trying to figure out what to do next. Words were so important in her relationship, but does she really know how to use her own voice? Inspired by her favourite authors, her first dates, and her experiments with writing groups, Clara asks, “what would it mean to evolve?” Written over four seasons, the play is a funny, frank, and moving representation of the intertwined processes of writing and defining one’s identity in a world of body-shaming, activism-slacktivism, and social media.

On her journey towards finding her creative voice, Clara also learns more about her body and how everyday decisions for women are marked by shame, fear, and the need to compete with impossible beauty standards. Through her attempts to build new relationships, including with her neighbour’s cat, she discovers both intimacy and a new-found sense of independence. Her realisation that life often feels like a monologue empowers her to speak with rage, wit, and curiosity about what binds us together as human beings; perhaps turning to art after losing a great love unites us all.

The multi-award-winning Terrorismo emocional (Emotional Terror) premiered at the Teatro Alianza, Montevideo, in 2018 and has since been restaged several times in Uruguay and performed in Argentina and Chile.

All plays at #OOTW2026 will be presented as staged readings.

OOTW2026 is supported by Language Acts and Worldmaking, the University of Reading, and the Instituto Cervantes London.
