PRESENTED BY MIMI LANFRANCHI
Mimi Lanfranchi is a London-based artist working across painting, text, drawing and sculpture.
In listening, talking, gossiping (positive) she considers our embodied relationship to digital landscapes, and the consequences of translation between physical and technological logics.
She slowly and meticulously renders images, texts, and icons onto surfaces that are as much concealing as they are revelatory. Playing with scale and visibility, stock images traced directly from the laptop screen and text almost invisible on long plywood boards, she encourages the viewer to take time. Subtle variations in the works’ surfaces engage us at multiple proximities, encouraging the body to be positioned as close to the work as it might get to the small rectangles which live in our pockets, on our laps and between our fingers.
Just as her own body grazes the screen when making the works, the observer is forced to consider surface, language, and temporality as their phone sits in their back pocket, touching them.
Lanfranchi graduated from BA Fine Art (4D+) at Central Saint Martins in 2023 and was subsequently awarded a place on the Associate Studio Programme, supported by UAL and ACME (2023- 2025). Her work has been shortlisted for The Sid Motion Gallery Prize (2023) and The Arts Thread Global Design Graduate Show in collaboration with Gucci (2023).
