Out of the Wings returns for its annual festival of Ibero-American playwriting. Celebrating our 10th festival, we present readings of plays from five different countries, all in English translation, and in the UK for the first time.
A large house.
Surrounded by an olive grove.
It’s hot.
The east wind blows.
The cicadas moan.
And the blackbird’s song collides with the beating of a nightingale’s wings.
Six Acres of Olive Trees casts light on a story of trauma, and how it's overcome. Júlia has only just come to understand the deep-rooted phobia of olives she's had since childhood. Out of a web of images, smells, words and figures from her past, she extracts the painful truth about the structural violence that pervaded her entire family.
The story begins as Júlia returns to the landscape of her memories - six acres of olive trees - with two cans of petrol, intending to burn it to oblivion. She hasn't counted on a meeting with her cousin, once her best friend. Amongst the olive trees, we witness their words, thoughts and memories as they share the past in order to free themselves from the fear and violence inflicted over so many years. Will everything be burnt?
All plays at #OOTW2026 will be presented as staged readings.
OOTW2026 is supported by Language Acts and Worldmaking, the University of Reading, and the Instituto Cervantes London.
