PRESENTED BY OUT OF THE WINGS
by Carla Zúñiga
translated and directed by Fran Olivares
Out of the Wings returns for its annual festival of Ibero-American playwriting. Celebrating our 10th festival, we present readings of plays from five different countries, all in English translation, and in the UK for the first time.
Sometimes when something so horrific happens, we tell ourselves it wasn't real just to survive.
Locked in a filthy flat during a global pandemic, Berenice, a famous but broken actress, is forced by her agent Estela to perform a digital play from her living room. Drunk and in a ridiculous costume, she spirals into a crisis of conscience and refuses to go on, declaring she has finally woken up to the absurdity of her life and the hollowness of the script she is performing. Estela frantically fields phone calls, pumps her with coffee, and weaponises breach of contract to keep the show going.
The tension breaks when Berenice reveals why she can no longer perform. The director of this play, a man the world adores, raped her in a dressing room decades ago. As she accuses Estela of complicity, the two women realise they share the same trauma, which has turned them into puppets repeating their own nightmare for a digital crowd. What begins as backstage comedy ends in sabotage. Together they smash the screens and wait for the predator to arrive. It is finally time to speak.
All plays at #OOTW2026 will be presented as staged readings.
OOTW2026 is supported by Language Acts and Worldmaking, the University of Reading, and the Instituto Cervantes London.
