AMERICAN CANDY

PRESENTED BY THE MANGO ENSEMBLE
Zaynab and Connor work in an American Candy store. It’s closing time and a customer still hasn’t left. 10 minutes later, they’re hiding her unconscious body in a basement.

DIRECTED BY FRANCESCA HSIEH, WRITTEN BY TOM MURRAY

Zaynab and Connor work in an American Candy store. It’s closing time and a customer still hasn’t left. Ten minutes later, they’re hiding her unconscious body in a basement.

In the following commotion, their secrets are revealed.

A thrilling dark comedy about capitalist corruption, “bullsh*t jobs”, and the distrust it all generates. And how these anxieties are projected onto minorities. It tackles “American” cultural imperialism, rise of the far right and increased racism and misogyny in the UK.

Through humour, thrilling plot and character driven comedy we explore our tense political landscape. In a world of Trump, Musk, an American-backed Reform UK, race riots incited by US oligarchs, and American Candy stores littering our high streets, this story has never felt so urgent. American Candy asks, what does it take for us to trust one another?
