KETURUNAN RUMINAH: A WHATSAPP PLAY

PRESENTED BY HATCH + OMNIBUS THEATRE
What’s your family chat group like? Ever wondered what other family chat groups are like?

3 things are certain in life.
Death, taxes and a family chat group on WhatsApp.

Keturunan Ruminah (Ruminah’s Descendants), is a new drama that unfolds entirely through a WhatsApp messaging platform in real time. Sit in on one such family’s chat group as they navigate through the challenge of being disconnected in a connected world. Join the group, sit back and watch as the story transforms in the palm of your hand.

A WhatsApp group chat, as we know it, connects multiple generations with the sole purpose of communication. For most parents, it’s a common space to get in touch with their children and grandchildren over the most mundane updates (Mama: Today I cooked Asam Pedas.) to important notifications (Siti: I am sorry to inform everyone that Sara has passed away.) For larger families, it’s a way to stay connected with extended members of the family. Over the years, these group chats have grown to become a ‘place’ to gather, gossip and share stories much like a digital coffee shop.

“It was really fascinating how they managed to pack so much cultural and interpersonal nuance into a 40ish-minute show, where all we have to go off on are people’s messages and the occasional video/audio.” Arts Equator

How does it work?

The clever folks at HATCH have created a show on WhatsApp, how on earth does that work?

It’s simple really! A few hours ahead of the show you’ll receive an email containing a link to join a WhatsApp chat, as well as a set of simple instructions to make sure you can enjoy the show in a private, safe and secure way.

Once you have joined, all you have to do is sit back and watch the chaos that is a family group chat unfold in real time.

And don’t worry, the WhatsApp group and all numbers will be deleted within 24 hours of the performance.

If you have any questions about how the performance works or security then please get in contact with boxoffice@omnibus-clapham.org.
