PLAYING THE REAL WORKSHOP

Part of Out of the Wings Festival

When we create plays, whether we write them, translate them or create them by adapting texts from other media, we are always thinking about translating multiple voices and giving them a new existence on stage.

If a voice belongs not to a fictional character, but to a real person, what are the creative challenges involved? What if the character is ‘real’ but the circumstances in which they find themselves onstage are wholly or partially imaginary? What about verbatim theatre where performers are required to play a heightened version of the ‘real’? What if the play has originated in another culture or language?

In this workshop, participants will explore dramatic texts based on factual stories, plays that re-imagine the experience of well-known figures, and verbatim scripts. We will look at a range of examples and draw on the work of authors presented in Out of the Wings, some of whom will be present at the workshop. Through a series of discussions and activities led by Almiro Andrade, participants will consider how to approach the multiple challenges of creativity and faithfulness as well as ethics and engagement, when using translation and adaptation to bring real lives to our stages.
