THE RISE OF HERMIT

PRESENTED BY STEVEN NGUYEN
A looming deadline hangs over third-year law student Hermit, but instead of working on his word count he’s gaming online.

Third-year law student and avid gamer, Hermit is living a double life. As his real-life becomes pale in comparison to his adventurous online life, he begins to find sanctuary on a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

But as he dives deeper into virtual reality, losing touch with actual reality, he becomes disconnected from relationships, misses phone calls, avoids social gatherings and all human contact. The only exception is when he bumps into his Uber Eats delivery driver.

Logging online to escape his anxiety and feel more digitally connected; Hermit might be slaying dragons and demons in the gaming world, but in the real world, he’s killing himself.

What can he do to break the cycle? Can he save himself?
