A nighttime picture of Europe from space with lights

DANCEFLOOR MEMORIES

BY LUCIE DEPAUW
TRANSLATED FROM FRENCH BY DANIEL EMERY
Dancefloor Memories is a story of love and loss at the twilight of existence, told in the form of a lyrical dance.

Lyon, France, 1991. Marguerite is a carer for Pierre, her husband of fifty years, whose memory is being robbed by Alzheimer’s. Increasingly alone, and looking for life outside their home, Marguerite begins attending dance classes at her local community centre. There she meets Gary, an American widower with a passion for life and holding the keys to a new freedom for Marguerite.

Daniel Emery is a director and translator from South London and Paris. He is an associate director of Shipwright and Peckham Levels theatres, with a focus on new productions and script development. His work as a director straddles genres, encompassing comedy, opera and pantomime, and has been performed across the UK and United States.

Lucy Depauw is a playwright from Lyon. France. She is a former winner of the Journées d’auteurs de Lyon and her work has been funded by the Fondation Beaumarchais. Dancefloor Memories was selected for support and performed by the Comédie Francaise in 2015. Lucie’s work HymeN (2011) was funded by the French National Theatre Centre (CNT). Her former innovative performances have been translated into several European languages including German, Serbian and Italian.
