Whispers from the Walls | An Intern’s Top 10 Picks From Our Summer Season

Summer is our favourite time of year and it’s about to get a whole lot better! With a thrillingly diverse array of productions spanning from immersive theatre to traditional storytelling to one-woman plays, it is hard to narrow down which productions we are the most excited for, but we can try...

Here are 10 of the most unique and hotly anticipated productions of our upcoming summer season, Whispers from the Walls. Can’t wait to welcome you all to our Offie-award-winning theatre. 


1. The Fate We Bring Ourselves

The best original storytellers? Easily the Greeks. In The Fate We Bring Ourselves, The Crick Crack Club will be remixing and extending three Greek myths. Expect sex with Zeus, twice-born gods, formidable goddesses and some nasty clashes between naive mortals and uppity deities. Performance storyteller Ben Haggarty presents these dark, magical, and provocative in a manner you will never forget.

2. The Yellow Wallpaper

Alice, a mother who according to her doctor and husband, simply does not love her baby enough. Consequently spiralling into a deep depression, Alice appears to be getting worse. Are her doctor and husband just ignoring the writing on the wall? Find out what is really going on in The Yellow Wallpaper.

3. Memories of Fiction: The Living Library

Libraries are cool. What’s even cooler than a library? A living library. That’s right, come experience one of our interactive installations where you can go on a sensory journey around Omnibus Theatre to explore stories of discovery, self-learning and escape, translated from memories of local readers. Memories of Fiction lets you experience these stories yourself!

4. XOGA

Romeo and Juliet? Ophelia and Hamlet? Do you eat up Shakespearean tragedies filled with jealousy, madness, and chance? Perfect. You’ll love XOGA. Part of our Sunday Music series, UK based opera company XOGA presents a tragedy filled evening of opera, drama, and dance.

5. Penguinpig

Love the internet? Me too. More than I’d like to admit. Adorable child Sophie also loves the internet. In her browsing she finds a Penguinpig. “Where can one find a Penguinpig?” You may ask. According to Sophie, the Penguinpig can be found at the zoo. But can you trust everything you read on the internet?  The perfect show for families in the “Black Mirror” dystopia in which we live.

6. A Life on the Wind: Telling a Story for Absolute Beginners

Unfortunately, many of us are not the best storytellers. Whether it be rambling on for ages or simply never getting to the point, there is a solution! Sally Pomme Clayton is here to help. This interactive workshop will give you the confidence to develop your own unique version of a fairy tale, myth or legend. Go forth and set free the story you were born to tell!

7. A Substitute for Life

You know that friend who always has their nose stuck in a book?  In this case, Francis is that friend. Born to affluence in the middle of the nineteenth century, Francis was that guy. That is before a family accident forces him back to reality. How will Francis cope? Find out in A Substitute for Life.

8. Engine Room

Sally Pomme Clayton is back to assist you with all your storytelling needs! This season of Engine Room focuses on the power of story and storytelling. Come as an individual or as a company and make sure to bring your ideas for the story you have always wanted to tell. Engine Room is a supportive, open, and inspiring place where your story can come to life!

9. The Non Parent Trap

Before we all jump to conclusions, no, Lindsay Lohan is not returning to acting. The Non Parent Trap will explore our modern obsession with other people’s procreation. We all know how tabloids blow celebrity pregnancy rumors out of proportion and how a certain leader of the free world that resembles a Cheeto is about to grab your p**sy at any moment. Why not take a step back and laugh at the current situation?

10. Into the Melting Pot

Get ready for musical history time machine. Into the Melting Pot, part of our Sunday Music series, features The Telling and their music and storytelling inspired by women of medieval Spain. Through emphasizing the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish peninsula, The Telling will take you to the days of Jewish expulsion in Spain. By listening to women’s stories of integration and love, this “multimedia experience of life, song, music, and storytelling” is one you will not want to miss.
