Jessica Hagen
Jessica Hagen won the 2018 Edinburgh Untapped Award for her debut play Queens of Sheba, which will run throughout Edinburgh Festival 2018. Of the back of Jessica’s debut play she has just been commissioned by the British Council to create new work in Ghana, I can’t wait to see what she has in store next.
Ryan Calais Cameron
Ryan won the 2018 Adopt a Playwright award, for his play Rhapsody, and is currently undergoing a year-long Offies residency/mentorship, developing a new play based on a young Sidney Poitier. Known for this year’s sell out hit TIMBUKTU at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, and as the Artistic Director of award-winning company Nouveau Riche.
Winnie Imara
Winnie is the writer of new play YEMI taking place at Omnibus Theatre’s Working Title scratch night. The piece takes a look at the pressure we as a society put on our young women and how it can physically and mentally tear them apart. Winnie was shortlisted for the 2017 Hightide First Commisions Award, and is an alumnus of the Royal Court writing programme.
Mufaro Makubika
A Zimbabwean writer that grew up in Nottingham. Mufaro won the 2017 Alfred Fagon Award for his play The Shebeen. It was specially commissioned by Nottingham Playhouse and is set to play at the Theatre Royal Stratford East. The Shebeen invites you to a party you never knew existed, shining a light on a community under siege and the sacrifices made for love.
Kalungi Ssebandeke
A young writer hailing from London who won rave reviews for his debut play Assata Taught Me that ran at the Gate Theatre last year. Kalungi has recently ben announced as the first ever recipient of the Bush Theatre’s new Passing the Baton Commission.
