Omnibus Lists | Kerry Andrew’s Top 5 Renditions of Folk Songs

By October 11, 2018No Comments

This is Kerry Andrew aka the winner of four British Composer Awards aka author of Swansong aka writer of a piece performed at the BBC Proms this year and last aka “stunning” (The Observer).

Clearly a very talented woman, which is why we’re so excited to welcome her to Omnibus Theatre. Kerry will be performing with her alt-folk project You Are Wolf as part of our Sunday Music programme this weekend.

But first a chance to get to know Kerry a little better, by finding out her favourite folk renditions!

Worcester City

Eliza Carthy
Eliza Carthy was my way into folk music when I was a student. I first knew her double album, Red Rice, but my favourite album of hers is Anglicana, a perfect collection of songs, exquisitely arranged. This is the opening track, which begins with a clever 3/4-against-4/4 rhythm.

Wayfaring Stranger

Jaime Woon
My first job was teaching at the BRIT School, and Jamie was there in my first year. Just before he broke into the charts, I invited him to come and play in East London at an experimental vocal night, and his rendition of this traditional American folk/gospel song with his two-pedal loop station was a big inspiration to me in getting my own loop station. I love how he brings his nu-soul/leftfield pop sensibility to this song.

The Cutty Wren (live)

Phil Minton
I love how malleable traditional songs can be in the hands of the best musicians. Phil Minton is an avant-garde improvising vocalist, and what he does with this ancient song (one which I also perform) is absolutely incredible! Watch the video – it’s as if Phil becomes possessed by old spirits!

Where Did You Sleep Last Night? (MTV Unplugged Session)

Nirvana
I grew up listening to North American country music, having lived in Canada when I was small, so North American songs have a particular appeal. I was also very into grunge as a grimy teenager, and I love Nirvana’s take on this song (also known as ‘In The Pines’). There is nothing more raw and visceral than Kurt Cobain’s shriek at the end of the song; it gives me shivers just thinking about it.

Packie Manus Byrne

Molly Bawn
When sourcing songs for my You Are Wolf work, I go to the most unadorned recordings; all traditional songs were built to be sung unaccompanied and it’s the best way to get under their skin. ‘Molly Bawn’ has always long-lasting appeal for me – so much so that I based my debut novel, Swansong, on it, and the Irish traditional singer Packie Manus Byrne’s version is my favourite.

Kerry Andrew will be at Omnibus Theatre 14 Oct as part of our Sunday Music programme – get your tickets HERE→
