1889 CIRCLE

Many Happy Returns?

In 2023 we celebrated our tenth birthday. We have achieved this remarkable milestone with some impressive support from the local community and our supporters. We are now launching our second major fundraising drive – 1889 Circle, a new scheme aiming to raise capital investment of £150,000 to create a more sustainable income. To get there we need to secure a more financial footing.

What is 1889 Circle?

In 1889, Clapham Library was opened – a public space for discovery, learning and storytelling.

Almost 135 years later, Clapham Library has moved but this beautiful Victorian building remains a space for the very same things. In 2013, after a seven-year public campaign to save the building from being turned into private flats, our home – the Omnibus Theatre you know – opened its doors.

We currently receive no guaranteed financial support from the local council or arts funding organisations. Instead, we rely upon the generosity of our audiences and supporters. Funds raised through the 1889 Circle will fund reconfiguration of the ground floor facilities to maximise use and improve the visitor experience by creating a welcoming space:
• Relocate existing ground floor toilets to the basement for access at the front of the building.
• Repurpose existing toilets on ground floor as a stock room to serve the café.
• Refurbish existing ground floor accessible toilets.
The income generated will be invested back into our theatre.
