A rare chance to see Keir play a solo show as The King Canutes gear up for the autumn release of their new album. New originals, old favourites, and the odd cover.
Richard Alwyn and Keir Woods are The King Canutes. Hailing from Brooklyn and London, respectively, they double down on and embrace the dynamic tension found in the singer-songwriter duo of The Go-Betweens and the long-distance, long-haul commitment of The Postal Service.
The crowned crusaders met in Brooklyn in the early 2000s, playing in NYC’s cosmopolitan pop/indie rock scene, then collecting collaborators and conspirators along the way. Woods supplies a sonorous true folk voice of Northern England while Alwyn plays the scrappy Replacements-style Middlewesterner.
Their new record features luminaries Dave Derby (Dambuilders, Gramercy Arms, Lloyd Cole), Kendall Meade (Sparklehorse, Mascott), Kevin March (Guided by Voices), Mac Gollehon (David Bowie, James Chance and tons more), Mike Dillon (Rickie Lee Jones), John Leon, David Nagler, Verena Wiesendanger and Jessie Kilguss. Up-tempo songs prove the underlying melancholy hasn’t (quite) beaten them down while gorgeous melodies are tempered with dented triumphs – The King Canutes will be your new best friends.
A long-time Clapham resident, when not creating with The King Canutes Keir can be spotted on the touchline at Broomwood Tigers FC, cheering on Battersea Ironsides U14 girls, and standing in line at Moens. This is what he has on his headphones.
All proceeds from the show will go to Routes.
Routes is a free week-long theatre programme for local 8 – 11 year olds from Lambeth and Wandsworth running six times a year during the school holidays. The programme is aimed at young people who qualify for pupil premium/free school meals, or who otherwise would significantly benefit from Routes
