Out of the Wings is a collective of theatre-makers, translators and researchers dedicated to exploring and promoting theatre in translation to the wider English-speaking world. It began life as a research project, leading to a unique archive of plays from Spain and Spanish America: outofthewings.org. In recent years we have grown to include work from Portuguese-speaking writers from Brazil and Lusophone Africa as well as Portugal, and have developed into a collective of theatre artists, researchers, producers and other colleagues, all with the shared goal of exploring and showcasing international theatre and the role of the translator.
We’re busy all year round! Out of the Wings meet every month to read and discuss new translations of Spanish or Portuguese-language plays. In the summer we run a week-long festival with staged readings of five different plays along with workshops and discussion groups. We welcome new members and love discovering new work.
