Next Sunday 30 Sept, guitarist Andrey Lebedev will appear with vocalist Lotte Betts-Dean to present a concert of ancient and modern music for guitar and voice. From the lute songs of John Dowland, a contemporary of William Shakespeare, to Brett Dean’s recent Gertrude Fragments, which examine Hamlet’s mother’s fall from grace.
But which, from the pantheon of great guitar pieces, are Andrey’s faves? Find out here!
Albeniz: Asturias
If you only hear one guitar piece in your life ever, hear this.
Tarrega: Recuerdos de la Alhambra
If you get to hear just one more, listen to the this. Recuerdos is magic – so simple but creates the impression of a voice speaking from another world.
Villa-Lobos: Five Preludes
These pieces fuse European harmony with Brazilian motifs and Villa-Lobos’s unparalleled skill for enchanting melodies. Every Prelude is a exquisite and collectively the set is like a Michelin star meal.
Barrios: La Catedral
The Paraguayan composer’s evocation of the Montevideo Cathedral. The calm stillness inside, the sound of the choir, and then the bustling of the busy city streets outside.
Leo Brouwer: Sonata for Guitar
This piece is exploding with Cuban grooves, catchy riffs, and mesmerising textures. Modern classical guitar music at it’s very best!
Andrey Lebedev will be at Omnibus Theatre with Lotte Betts-Dean on 30 Sept as part of our Sunday Music programme – get your tickets HERE→
