AIYAA 哎呀

PRESENTED BY PANGEA ART
A Chinese mother straddling Eastern and Western expectations while navigating the perilous path of perfect parenthood.

Aiyaa 哎呀 Interjection. (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, informal) ah; oh; an exclamation of exuberance, a shout of hurt, a cry of fear, an accusation of blame, the reflex of being startled and the embrace of joy.

Aiyaa encompasses the full spectrum of motherhood.

This semi-autobiographical show follows a mom in an IG world struggling to keep her sanity in the midst of opposing social and cultural values. Should you be a tiger, helicopter, crunchy, scrunchie mom or none of the above? And how do we keep up with the Joneses while keeping our head above water in our inherited sense of identity?

A physical and comedic show that takes raw and honest look at personal migrant heritage and the struggle to meet modern expectations of motherhood.

The performance on Sunday 19 March will be relaxed for parents with Babe in Arms. This means that we welcome babies who are not yet crawling or toddling.

The sound and lights will be adjusted slightly but the text of the script will not: please be advised that there is swearing and description of birth. Feel free to feed your baby, bounce them to sleep and leave/return for nappy changes.

Tickets are free for under-2s, but please reserve a free space when you are booking your own ticket, so our team know how many infants to expect.

The performance on Sunday 19 March will be broadcast live to view from the comfort of your sofa. Tickets for the livestream can be bought here→
