Give feedback, offer ideas and discover the next generation of theatre before anyone else.

Artists that have previously presented work include; Nouveau Riché, Vera Chok, The Queer House, Opia Collective, Cocoa Butter Club and Playing On.

Check out the full line-up below.

ARTIST TESTIMONIALS:

Engine Room is the exact thing that we emerging artists need right now, especially those of us who are a part of marginalised communities. Having the time and space to experiment and fail safely is invaluable. Personally, I feel so honoured to have been selected and grateful for the opportunity. I was able to rehearse, workshop, have a private reading, and get audience feedback all for free, which is truly incredible. I am so happy that Engine Room exists and would like to thank anyone who has made it a possibility.

CHICKEN COTTAGE

Presented by Shona Graham
Directed by Isobel Jacob

Luke wants a hug. Mel wants a Chicken Cottage.

Luke and Mel’s relationship takes a strain when an ordinary night turns less-than-ordinary.

Chicken Cottage is a heartfelt exploration of all the ways in which we don’t get what we want from other people. The impetus for its inception was writer Shona Graham revisiting her dissertation on rape-revenge films (among other things) and feeling like discussions of sexual assault were centred on the wrong things and the wrong people. As an actor herself, Shona loves telling sparce, intimate stories that leave a lot of room for creative and collaborative interpretation and expression.

JO AND JOE TAKE ON THE WORLD ONE EDIBLE AT A TIME

Presented by WetSock Productions

“When you talk, do you want me to respond or are you just airing every single thought you have out loud?

“Gonna have to think on that one.”

Joe wants to be with Jo. Jo’s not so sure. Thankfully, they’re trapped together in a claustrophobic space pod hurtling through the cosmos so plenty of time to discuss.

Set in a near future with space whales, gigantic weed trees, and a queer-exclusive colony funded by dead billionaires, Jo and Joe tells the story of falling in love in spite of yourself. And what it looks like to finally find home.

THE GOOD PERSON

Presented by Hugo Timbrell

A Crime Drama with no culprit. A confession. An endless loop.

After junior doctor Sam has a patient unexpectedly die on her watch, she falls down the deep, dark rabbit hole of reason, logic and responsibility. Once the thought gets stuck, that she herself may have killed the patient, she can’t seem to get it out of her head. Sam attempts to fight her way to certainty, but gets trapped in a strange loop, that just gets deeper and deeper. A play for two actors and a whole host of characters, from The Private Investigator, to St Ignatius of Loyola, to The Funeral Home Director, The Good Person explores how scary trying to solve the unsolvable is, but how leaving it unsolved is even more terrifying.
