Give feedback, offer ideas and discover the next generation of theatre before anyone else.

Artists that have previously presented work include; Nouveau Riché, Vera Chok, The Queer House, Opia Collective, Cocoa Butter Club and Playing On.

Check out the full line-up below.

ARTIST TESTIMONIALS:

Engine Room is the exact thing that we emerging artists need right now, especially those of us who are a part of marginalised communities. Having the time and space to experiment and fail safely is invaluable. Personally, I feel so honoured to have been selected and grateful for the opportunity. I was able to rehearse, workshop, have a private reading, and get audience feedback all for free, which is truly incredible. I am so happy that Engine Room exists and would like to thank anyone who has made it a possibility.

Mimi: The Average Mermaid

by TAKDAJA

Deep down in an ocean flat lives a, well not quite a little mermaid, and also not necessarily a big one either – you might say she’s just ‘average sized’. This clown comedy show follows Mimi on her adventures and new life experiences both on land and under the sea. In a ‘sea-shell’, Mimi: The Average Mermaid is a social commentary on feminism, inequality, identity crisis, and moral hypocrisy which lingers through many of us in this day and age.

How British Are You

by Victor Rios

A tv-show-like to test how British are we?, through the life journey of a migrant who came from the high altitude of the Andes as a young person, embraces the cultural change in London, and now is conflicted to identify himself. Is he Bolivian? Is he Latino? Is he British or what is he? Or what are we?

Victor Rios is a British Latin American, theatre maker and video facilitator, his work involves participatory arts to enhance the voices of unheard communities through the use of arts. He has been commissioned by several charities to work with different types of communities such as Refugees, Adults with learning disabilities, BAME and the Latin American Community.

In this piece, he explores his journey of migration through cultural adaptation and looking for answers on his own identity linking his memories of childhood, and exploring the usage of video mapping with a new piece of writing.

lilacs out of the dead land

by OPIA Collective

A dance and design led devised piece based around ‘The Wasteland’ that explores the people of the city we live in and further challenges the theatre-making process that we have been developing.

REPARATIONS

by Maryam Garad

Aisha is a theif.

Since 7 she’s been nicking anything and everything in sight. If she can grab it, she will take it. The feeling is pure euphoria!

Upon her release from prison, she struggles to navigate a world which won’t allow her to have the clean slate that she desperately desires. She decides that she must enter a new era of healing in order to transform her life.

However, her objectives soon change when she encounters V, a wealthy young woman with whom she immediately forms a deep infatuation for. As their friendship develops it soon becomes very clear to Aisha that stealing material items simply isn’t enough. True happiness will come when she steals this woman’s life.

Reparations for the life that was stolen from her…

At least that’s how Aisha justifies her actions.
