Our regular scratch programme, where dynamic and talented theatre makers present daring, new work in the first stages of development.

Engine Room puts you, the audience, at the heart of the creative process. Following the sharing you will be asked to complete a feedback form, with your comments directly influencing the next development of the pieces. Give feedback, offer ideas and discover the next generation of theatre before anyone else.

Artists that have previously presented work include; Nouveau Riché, Vera Chok, The Queer House, Opia Collective, Cocoa Butter Club and Playing On.

Check out the full line-up below.

ARTIST TESTIMONIALS:

Engine Room is the exact thing that we emerging artists need right now, especially those of us who are a part of marginalised communities. Having the time and space to experiment and fail safely is invaluable. Personally, I feel so honoured to have been selected and grateful for the opportunity. I was able to rehearse, workshop, have a private reading, and get audience feedback all for free, which is truly incredible. I am so happy that Engine Room exists and would like to thank anyone who has made it a possibility.

(In) Good Spirits

by KT Miles

“There’s something we didn’t know before. Or didn’t accept. Ican’t explain it, but today, I feel lighter. I stand here freer than I’ve been in years.”

In a derelict house, four unknowing spirits learn to become the perfect fit for each other. Their almost-idyllic routine, however, is interrupted by the announce of a demolition. With their home in peril, Joanne, Alex, Mara, and Ted attempt to protect their found family.

Created and produced with an emphasis on queer joy, this show casts a soft, warm light of human relationships in all their beauty and complexity. A touching drama that will leave you feeling lifted, and guaranteed to appeal to anyone with a love for abandoned buildings and the 1980s!

Impasto

by Maria Leonard

Centred around the long-anticipated outcome of a report conducted by the Care Quality Commission into mental health services in England, Impasto is a solo performance that invites the audience into an intimate deconstruction of a year in and out of counselling sessions, in and out of the weights room, on and off the paint canvas.

The presence of the government in the most intimate part of our lives is a real and unforgiving thing. And it’s only in setting your own standard for getting free that you might find the political impulse to express yourself. To get it out of you. On to the canvas. Make the paint work like muscle. Build it up and get it out of you. On to the canvas.

Places I Never Think About

by Transit Theatre

Places I Never Think About is a myth-ified exploration of the real-life experiences of Eastern European immigrants in the UK, examining identity, queerness and migrant joy through multidisciplinary storytelling including live-music, song, movement and poetry.

The show follows a group of migrant workers living in the UK, all with a connection to Eastern Europe, sharing stories of family, love and migration. Each story is a personal exploration that takes us away from the realistic setting and into a bio-mythical world of folk tales, monsters and lots of music. As each character summons their past we learn of the ideological rift between migrants and the families they left behind as they seek to navigate the world between their old and new lives.

Please Don't Come

by Jack Davies & Runa Augdal

Please Don’t Come is a newly written and devised piece by Jack Davies and Runa Augdal, two recent graduates from East 15 Acting Schools MA Theatre Directing programme. They are a newly formed duo concentrated on delivering work with a focus on heritage, mythology and honest human interaction. They would love to meet creatives that are just as excited about their way of viewing the world as they are.

Try Again

by Build A Door

Three completely different Latinx female actors find themselves in a waiting room for the next biggest Latinx casting in the UK.

Who feels more Latina? Who looks more Latina? How will their identities intersect when they find themselves measuring up to an unrealistic standard?

A devised performance exploring the immigration process of each. How it gets shaped by the stereotyping gaze of the industry and how that affects their lives, their identity, their development as artists, and how they interact as female actors in a waiting room.

Our Common Voice

by Georgie Bailey in Association with ChewBoy Productions

Somewhere, George is born. Somewhere, George is about to live a very important life. He will slay a dragon someday and the world will celebrate him. Except…maybe they won’t. Maybe he’ll be the villain.

Maybe he’ll enter the world kicking and screaming and smacking and clawing. Maybe he’ll say things he doesn’t mean. And maybe the constellations of people around him will say those things back.

And who’s side will you choose when that play is maybe performed?

Our Common Voice is a brand-new experimental, lyrical solo show from the multi-award-winning playwright, poet and performer Georgie Bailey, exploring the preconceived ideas around working-class young people, the words we use and what society expects us to be as we grow older.

So, all that’s left to ask is… what kind of story do you want to be part of?

GREGNANT

by Hector Huang

A young trans person experiences budding romance and heartbreak all on the same tube ride, and learns to navigate the in-between-ness of his journey, much like his transness and migrant status.

GREGNANT is a piece of new writing that deals with themes such as queer relationship and migration’s influence on one’s identity and relationships. The piece is currently being developed into a full-length play and looks forward to incorporate different storytelling media on stage.

When The Fun Stops, Try Again?

by Nathan Charles

‘There’s a one in twenty-one chance you’ll end the show. There’s a one in twenty-one chance you’ll win a cash prize. What are you gonna do?’

An interactive show about addiction, grief and winning the jackpot. When The Fun
Stops, Try Again? is a semi-autobiographical exploration of working-class addiction and how we can’t help but dream of a more lavish life.

Part storytelling, part stand-up, part dream, When The Fun Stops, Try Again? asks: What would YOU do if you won the lottery, and how much would you be willing to risk to get it?

Presented by Nathan Charles with Brightmouth Productions

Yin Yoga

by Emily Renée & Tamar Saphra

In a community centre in a small town in the UK, a group of strangers meet to move and breathe together, seeking refuge from the outside world. Faith, their yoga instructor, is an enigmatic and benevolent figure whose mission is to bring fulfilment and healing to her students. But when new students Cory and Jay start attending her classes – something changes.

Yin Yoga is the beginnings of a new play, and a collaboration between playwright Emily Renée and director-dramaturg Tamar Saphra. In a predominantly secular culture, the increasingly westernised practice of yoga seems to somehow transcend our personal belief systems – the play asks how we might begin to navigate this apparent opposition. What power dynamics are at play? How do we balance our cynicism and sincerity in these spaces? And is it ever truly possible to rid ourselves of our pain?

I Want My Foreskin Back

by Joseph Winer

25 years ago, something was taken from me. And now I want it back.

I Want My Foreskin Back is my debut TED-talk-cum-cabaret performance, exploring Jewish ritual, gay culture, and a major quarter-life identity crisis. Should be fun.
