ARTIST TESTIMONIALS:

Engine Room is the exact thing that we emerging artists need right now, especially those of us who are a part of marginalised communities. Having the time and space to experiment and fail safely is invaluable. Personally, I feel so honoured to have been selected and grateful for the opportunity. I was able to rehearse, workshop, have a private reading, and get audience feedback all for free, which is truly incredible. I am so happy that Engine Room exists and would like to thank anyone who has made it a possibility.

REVERB

PRESENTED BY ANNA CLART

East Germany, 1982: Mira is a low-ranking employee of the Stasi, tasked with transcribing the phone calls of those betraying their loved ones to the state. As she gathers proof after proof that no one is to be trusted, her relationships and grasp on reality begin to fracture. Reverb explore the GDR’s culture of fear and self-censorship: What happens when a state weaponises its people against each other? It is a mixture of audio and live theatre, the two forms increasingly mixing and blurring as the story progresses.

Reverb is rooted in the author’s family history and informed by research into Stasi documents and archives. It is the 2023 winner of Titchfield Festival Theatre’s New Playwright Competition.

CANCELLING PATJI

PRESENTED BY NAMOO CHAE LEE

It is about two sisters whose father was called out at the biggest Me Too case of the country on their special day of shamanistic ritual to wash off their bad fate.

Mirroring the Korean traditional fairy tale of Kongji and Patji, we see how the guilt transfer to the family members and the stereotypical labeling fall upon their face. Witnessing how the age-old concept of morality, justice and power depicted in folklore continue to function in contemporary society, particularly in the context of cancel culture and public shaming, the play questions how far cancel culture aligns with the ideals of justice, while drawing on the rich history of Korea to provide a unique lens through which to view these global phenomes.

Eventually, this is the story of two sisters who fight against those stereotypes and stand independently with love and mutual support.
